Thomas Jackson
Next to Robert E. Lee, Jackson becomes the most famous officer in the entire Confederate Army. Orphaned as a youth, he studies hard and graduates from West Point in 1846. He fights at the concluding Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican War than accepts a position teaching physics and artillery at VMI and Sunday School to local Black children. In 1859 he joins Lee in capturing John Brown at his Harper’s Ferry Raid. His “Stonewall” nickname traces to gallantry at 1st Bull Run, and he plays a critical role in defeating Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley. Idiosyncrasies abound with the general. He sucks on lemons, holds his right arm in the air “for internal balance,” invokes the Lord’s name, and is called “Old Blue Light” for the look in his eyes during battle. As head of Lee’s II Corps, his prowess for attack is evident from 2nd Bull Run to Antietam. But then comes Chancellorsville where a nighttime reconnaissance ends with his left arm amputated, followed four days later by death.
