Joshua Chamberlain
The “hero of Gettysburg,” Chamberlain is teaching modern languages at his alma mater, Bowdoin College, before joining the Union Army in August 1862. He is promoted to Colonel of the 20th Maine in the Fall of 1862 after which he earns the Medal of Honor for his heroic bayonet charge in defense of the critical high ground on Little Round Top at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He ends the war as a General alongside Grant at Lee’s Appomattox surrender.
