James Longstreet
Longstreet’s nicknames include “Old Pete” and “Lee’s war horse.” His roots are on a Georgia cotton plantation, but he eschews its refined culture for outdoor pursuits. He enters West Point and graduates 54th out of the 56 cadets in his 1842 class. Bravery in the Mexican War leads to a promotion to Major, and while there he befriends U.S. Grant who marries his cousin, Julia Dent. Longstreet opposes secession, but joins the CSA army and is promoted to Major General after 1st Bull Run. Lee assigns him to command of the 1st Corps and he leads it all the way through Appomattox despite suffering a severe wound at the Wilderness. At Gettysburg he fails to get Lee to call off Pickett’s Charge and after the war is vilified in the South for delaying the assault, becoming a Republican, and supporting Grant.
