Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln’s leadership as 16th President saves the Union while ridding the nation of slavery and aiding the assimilation of freed Blacks into society. Starting from humble Kentucky roots, he quarrels with his farmer father and leaves home at 22. In New Salem he is called the town’s “strongest, smartest, funniest, ugliest man.” He tries many jobs before joining a law firm in Springfield, then weds Mary Todd and becomes successful riding the circuit. His politics favor Whig Henry Clay and in 1848 he is elected to a disappointing single term in the US House. Opposition to the 1854 Nebraska Act brings him back into politics, and he wins the 1860 Presidential election, but with under 40% of the popular vote. His pledge to ban slavery in the west prompts the Civil War. Before his assassination in 1865, his Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment ensure the end of slavery.
