William Tecumseh Sherman
From the Battle of Shiloh forward, “Uncle Billy” or “Cump” Sherman becomes Grant’s go to asset. He is called America’s first modern day general for his “War is hell” attacks on the South’s army and entire infrastructure and civilian population. He graduates 5th in his 1840 West Point class, then misses the Mexican War, before exiting the army in 1853, first to become a banker and then Superintendent of the Louisiana State Military College (LSU). In 1861 he rejoins the army and fights well at 1st Bull Run. Despite accusations of mental instability, he joins Grant in his victories at Ft. Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg and is promoted to lead the Army of Tennessee. In the Spring of 1864 he launches his decisive “March to the Sea” through Atlanta and on to Savannah. He is later named General of all U.S. Armies while repeatedly refusing to be nominated as a Republican presidential candidate.
