Ulysses S. Grant
In Grant, Lincoln finally finds the General with the right balance of military skill and dogged determination to invade the South and crush the rebels. He graduates from West Point and serves in the Mexican War before resigning and failing as a businessman. But the war resurrects him and his victory at Ft. Donelson makes him famous as “Unconditional Surrender” US Grant. Wins at Shiloh and Vicksburg lead to Commander-in-Chief status and the defeat of Lee at Appomattox. In 1868 he becomes the 18th U.S President, serving two often troubled terms before succumbing to throat cancer at sixty-three after smoking a dozen cigars a day.
