Gettysburg Confederates
This photograph is taken by Mathew Brady, on July 15, 1863 at Gettysburg, twelve days after the decisive Union victory. It shows three Confederate prisoners standing on Seminary Ridge, just south of the town, awaiting an escort off the field. Their headgear, knapsacks, canteens and straight undyed cotton trousers are all typical of the informal dress favored by rebel soldiers, as is their demeanor signaling confidence and defiance.
