George Pickett
Pickett’s name rings down America’s memory for his doomed charge against the Union center at Gettysburg on the third day of battle. He is a first-born son of a prominent Virginia family who grows up on a James River plantation at Turkey Island. Pickett graduates last in his 1846 class at West Point before heading off to the Mexican War and honors for bravery at the final battle for Chapultepec. He joins the CSA Army in 1861, a flamboyant figure with long oiled ringlets of hair crowned by a small blue kepi; a tailored uniform with gold buttons; and a riding whip for his black stallion. At Gettysburg, Lee orders Pickett’s troops to lead a ¾ mile uphill assault across an open field to Cemetery Ridge. Of his 12,000 men, half become casualties before retreating. Pickett never forgives Lee saying “that Old Man had my Division massacred.” Still he remains with Lee even to the surrender at Appomattox. The U.S. government grants Pickett a full pardon in 1874 one year before his death.
