George Meade
As the battle for Gettysburg breaks out, Pennsylvania’s own George Meade is Lincoln’s choice to confront Lee. He is born in Cadiz, Spain, emigrating at two years old to Philadelphia and graduating from West Point’s class of 1835. He fights in the Mexican War, is wounded during McClellan’s Peninsula campaign, and leads the Grand Left Wing at Fredericksburg. His soldiers refer to him as “Old Snapping Turtle” for his bulging eyes, his short temper, and firm commitment to discipline. Despite securing victory at Gettysburg, he is criticized for resting his exhausted troop on July 4 rather than launching an attack on Lee’s remaining forces. Still Grant sticks with Meade throughout the decisive Overland Campaign to Appomattox.
