Fort Sumter
The bombarded exterior wall of Ft. Sumter stands forever as a symbol of the destruction reaped upon America by the Civil War. After becoming the first state to secede, South Carolina demands that the U.S. turn over the four U.S. forts in Charleston Harbor. Despite any lack of guidance from Washington, Major Robert Anderson moves the troops he commands into Ft. Sumter and prepares to defend it. Secretary of State William Seward signals the South that evacuation is imminent, but Lincoln disagrees and orders the navy to send a fleet with reinforcements. However, it arrives too late, and on April 13, 1861 the Confederates unleash a cannonade that ends with a surrender on April 14 and the start of the Civil War. For his actions, the Kentucky born Anderson becomes an overnight hero across the North.
